LORD
OF THE ESTATE A
great white heron— so
startling white, whiter than
the sails of the boat beyond
it—lifts off with
an easy leap into
invisible air, which
it kneads with its
huge wings to
the time of heart-beats. It
tucks in its neck, stretches
its legs behind
it and circles the
salt marsh like
a lord assaying his estate. |
