GIVING
OUT CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
At
the soup kitchen we wrap Christmas presents and place them on four tables: men,
women, boys, girls, then ask the guests to come and choose a gift. A woman in
her 60’s walks over to the table for girls, “Can I have one of these
dolls?” she says pointing to several soft and fuzzy dolls dressed in blue,
pink, yellow plush. “Sure,” I respond, “you have a granddaughter who’d
like one?” “No, actually,” she motions for me to come over closer, and
whispers, “You see when I get into bed at night, I like to have something
cuddly to hold—gives me a comforting feeling. Now I fold up an old scarf and
hold it next to my face, but having a soft doll like this next to me,” she
picks up one of them, “would be much nicer.”
