Elijah’s Chariot

A northwest wind, bright sun,

sprinkles diamonds across the water

except for the curious black streak

near the distant shore.

Elijah, who legend says,

arrives when least expected,

landed his flaming chariot there,

skied across the lake and disappeared

in the marshland beyond

where he fed beavers

and dragon flies with their transparent wings

like those of the cherubim

at the Temple in Jerusalem .
